Public interest, not their own, will save media | Bangkok Post: opinion


(Bangkok Post file photo)The recent attempt by the National Reform Steering Assembly's media reform panel to push through a media regulation bill seems like part of a "roadmap" to restrict freedom of speech. The partiality of the media is the rationale for the proposers of the controversial media regulation bill. The draft version calls for an establishment of a national media council with the authority to impose a code of conduct and deliberate on violation complaints. The reason given is to protect unlicensed media outlets or fake media -- especially those with political affiliations. It comes back to the need for media reform which is supposed to be handled by members of the media themselves.
